No Daily News, No Filings Today
Today is Veteran’s Day. All U.S. government agencies are closed in observance of this national holiday.
Not coincidentally, it is also the sixth anniversary of the tempest in a teapot that erupted over ABC TV’s broadcast of an unexpurgated version of the movie “Saving Private Ryan.” Although an unedited version of the film had run before on network television, it wasn’t until 2004 that certain affiliates refused to run the movie, citing fears of FCC violations in the wake of the infamous Janet Jackson-Justin Timberlake “wardrobe malfunction.” (Here is what FCC Chairman Michael Powell had to say about the incident.)
The FCC later issued a Memorandum and Opinion and Order declaring its position that the movie did not in fact meet its definition of “indecent and profane.”
