Using the Force

September 13, 2010

Apparently the secret to saving the publishing industry lies in divulging national security secrets: the Pentagon is working to purchase every copy of a book called “Operation Dark Heart.”  The book, written by former Defense Intelligence Agency officer Anthony Shaffer, discusses secret operations in Afghanistan and Pakistan.

While the Army greenlighted the manuscript in January, it is reported that the defense department wishes there had been quite a few revisions and redactions, going so far as to say that the book “could reasonably be expected to cause serious damage to national security.”  And so the Pentagon finds itself scrambling to purchase the 10,000 copies of the book’s first printing.

Shaffer apparently discusses “a group that called themselves the Jedi Knights,” saying he was working for “the dark side of the force.”  Given that people are now rushing for copies of his book, it looks like the force is strong with Shaffer.
