A Ticker for Tickers
Though former Vice President Dick Cheney is recovering from his fifth heart attack, there’s a good chance he no longer has a pulse. That’s because this time, he was implanted with a ventricular assist device, or VAD, a partial artificial heart that constantly pushes blood, rather than mimicking the body’s natural heartbeat. Cheney’s VAD of choice, the HeartMate II, is manufactured by California-based Thoratec (THOR) and is only one of several models available. The company would not disclose to the New York Times the number of HeartMate II devices it has implanted; but you can find out their total product sales on page 42 of their most recently filed 10-K, available on our SEC Filings page.
