Arcane rules limit shareholder voting rights. Recently, however, savvy investors have aligned their goals for encouraging corporate social responsibility with the risk management goals of corporations and their major investors. Amelia Timbers uses the example of coal ash disposal risk to illustrate how corporate accountability nonprofit As You Sow was able to convince giant proxy advisory firms such as Riskmetrics Group to recommend that their institutional clients vote for resolutions mandating proper coal ash disposal.
